I have photographed elopements inside RMNP, and there is really nowhere else like it. If you are planning a Rocky Mountain National Park elopement, this guide is for you. It covers permits, locations, timing, and what to expect on the day itself.

What You Need to Know About Getting a Wedding Permit for Your Rocky Mountain National Park elopement

Getting married in Rocky Mountain National Park requires a special use permit. Applying early is the single most important thing you can do. RMNP limits the number of wedding ceremonies permitted each month. Popular summer and fall dates fill up much faster than most couples expect. Permits become available one year in advance, with each month opening on the first of that month. If your wedding date is July 20th, have your application ready to send by the previous July 1st.

The permit fee is $300, and the park entrance fee is $30 per vehicle. Getting your marriage license in Estes Park at the Larimer County Clerk and Recorder office adds another $30. Your base cost to elope in RMNP runs around $360 before photography and other vendors. Colorado also allows self-solemnization, which means you do not need an officiant to make your marriage legal. That is a genuinely nice option for couples who want to keep things simple and personal.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer">

A Few Things I Always Tell My Couples Before They Apply

A few things I always make sure my couples understand before we finalize their permit:

Your ceremony has to take place at one of RMNP’s designated ceremony locations. Full stop. You can absolutely spend the rest of your day hiking to Dream Lake or shooting portraits along Trail Ridge Road. Just remember that vows and ceremonial activities need to happen at the permitted site.

Everyone counts toward your guest limit, including your photographer, videographer, officiant, and any children in attendance. Guest limits vary by location, with some ceremony sites allowing up to 30 people total and others capping out lower. Review the specifics for the location you are considering before you finalize your headcount.

RMNP has clear rules about what you can and cannot bring into the ceremony space. No arches, no chairs, no runners, no amplified music, no flower petals or birdseed. My honest recommendation: let the landscape do the work. The Rockies are better decor than anything you could bring in.

Parking is worth thinking through early, too. Each ceremony location has a vehicle limit, so if everyone plans to drive separately, that can become a problem quickly. Carpooling or using the park shuttle (available in summer) is the practical move.

One thing that often surprises couples: your finalized wedding permit also covers portrait photography elsewhere in the park after your ceremony. So we can build in a second location, like Dream Lake, without needing a second permit.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 class="wp-block-spacer">

My Favorite Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement Combination: Moraine Park and Dream Lake

My favorite way to structure a Rocky Mountain National Park elopement is to pair two locations that feel completely different from each other: Moraine Park for the ceremony and Dream Lake for portraits.

I love Moraine Park for the ceremony portion of the day. You get those wide, open meadow views, the mountain backdrop, the wildlife, the evergreens. And the accessibility is something I genuinely appreciate when couples have family joining them or simply want the ceremony to feel relaxed, not like a physical feat. Moraine Park Amphitheater is also the only designated ceremony site in RMNP that allows leashed dogs, which matters a lot to some couples.

Hiking to Dream Lake for Portraits

Then we move into the adventurous part of the day and hike to Dream Lake. There is time along the trail to slow down, find small moments, make images that feel candid and unplanned. And when you arrive at the lake, the landscape shifts completely. You went from an open meadow with elk and evergreens to something that feels alpine and quiet and surrounded on all sides by peaks. A gallery that moves through both places ends up telling a really full story. You get two versions of RMNP in a single day.

There are several other designated RMNP ceremony locations worth knowing about depending on your priorities. Sprague Lake is accessible and offers stunning lake and mountain views, with a summer guest limit of 15. Bear Lake is another lakeside option, though it is not available on weekends during peak season. 3M Curve gives you a rocky overlook with real mountain drama. Hidden Valley is one of the more private ceremony sites in the park. Each location has its own vehicle limits, dog policies, and accessibility considerations, so it is worth looking at a few before deciding.

What Is the Best Time of Year for a Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement?

Each season inside RMNP is genuinely beautiful, but they come with different logistics. Summer, July through mid-September, offers the most predictable conditions. Trail Ridge Road is fully open, the days are long, and the temperatures are comfortable, especially for early morning sessions. Summer is also peak permit season, so book early.

Fall is spectacular. Late September through mid-October brings golden aspen color throughout the park, and elk rut season means you are likely to see and hear elk in areas like Moraine Meadow. It does get busy with leaf-peepers on weekends, so a weekday date in fall is worth considering.

Eloping in Spring or Winter In RMNP?

Spring in RMNP still looks like winter well into April and May. Snow on the ground is common, and some higher elevation areas including Trail Ridge Road may not be accessible until late May. That said, a spring elopement in RMNP can be really striking if you and your partner prepare for it.

Winter elopements are possible and can be some of the most beautiful I have seen: frozen lakes, fresh snowpack, total quiet in the park. They do require serious preparation, including layering, micro spikes, and hand warmers, and flexibility if conditions change. Always check with rangers on trail and ice conditions before the day.

If privacy matters to you, weekday mornings are your best bet in any season. Sunrise light in RMNP is something else, and the park feels like a completely different place at that hour.

What Does a Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement Day Actually Look Like?

A well-built RMNP elopement moves through two or more locations and feels like a full experience, not a photo session with vows added on. Here is how a typical day might flow using my favorite Moraine Park and Dream Lake combination:

Morning: Get ready at your accommodation in Estes Park. I love building in time for detail shots: rings, vow books, the small things that tell the story of who you are.

Mid-morning: Drive into the park and arrive at your permitted ceremony location. Exchange vows with just the landscape, and whoever you have chosen to be there, as your witness.

After the ceremony: Head toward Bear Lake trailhead and begin the hike to Dream Lake. Plan for the hike to take around an hour depending on pace. We will likely stop often along the way to make images.

Golden hour: Portraits at Dream Lake with the peaks reflected in the water.

A Few Fun Supplemental Ideas!

If you want to build in a picnic, a champagne moment, or even a stargazing session after sunset, RMNP is the kind of place where those things fit. You do not need to force any of it.

One important note for planning: RMNP uses a seasonal timed-entry reservation system during its busiest months. The Bear Lake Road Corridor includes Moraine Park, Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, and Dream Lake. Depending on the season and time of your visit, it may require a timed-entry reservation. Requirements change from year to year, so I always recommend checking current National Park Service guidelines before your elopement date. Secure any reservations you need as early as possible. Reach out to me and I will help you figure out what you need as we build your timeline together.

Ready to Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park?

Eloping in RMNP is one of the most memorable things I get to be part of as a photographer. The logistics are manageable when you plan ahead, and the experience of standing in the middle of that landscape with the people you love most is something couples come back to describe for years.

If you are starting to plan and want guidance on ceremony locations, timeline building, or what the permit process looks like for your specific date, I would love to help. Reach out here and we can start putting something together that actually fits the two of you.

View my elopement work

FAQs

Do you need a permit to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park?
Yes, you need a special use permit to hold a wedding ceremony inside Rocky Mountain National Park. The permit costs $300 and must be obtained through the National Park Service. Permits are limited each month and available up to one year in advance. Because popular summer and fall dates fill quickly, applying as early as possible gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date and location.

What are the best spots to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park?
The best elopement spots in RMNP depend on what you are looking for. For ceremony locations, Moraine Park Amphitheater offers open meadow views and is the only site that allows dogs. Sprague Lake and Bear Lake provide lakeside settings. For portraits after the ceremony, Dream Lake and Trail Ridge Road offer some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the park. Each location has different guest limits, vehicle limits, and accessibility levels.

How far in advance do you need to book an RMNP elopement?
You can apply for a Rocky Mountain National Park wedding permit up to one year before your date. Permits for each month become available on the first of that same month the year prior. Summer and fall dates fill the fastest, so applying as soon as that window opens is strongly recommended. Booking your photographer well in advance of the permit application is also a good idea so you have support in choosing a ceremony location and building your timeline.

More Questions About Eloping in RMNP

What is the best time of year to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park?
Summer (July through mid-September) offers the most accessible conditions, with all roads open and long days for photography. Colorado also allows self-solemnization, meaning you can legally marry without an officiant if you prefer a ceremony that is just the two of you.

How much does it cost to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park?
The base cost to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park is around $360.
