Photographed couples while standing at the edge of Brainard Lake while a couple laughed so hard they had to stop and breathe, and watched people walk into downtown Denver feeling nervous and walk out an hour later completely themselves!

Colorado will do that. This state has so many options for engagement photos that choosing one can feel genuinely overwhelming, especially when you are also planning a wedding and approximately forty other things at the same time.

So this is my honest guide. After 10 years photographing this state, here are the locations I keep coming back to, with real notes on what makes each one work and what you should know before you book.

P.S. If you are looking for more info about me and the services I offer contact me here!

Downtown Denver: For Couples Who Actually Love the City

Downtown Denver gets underestimated as an engagement session location and I will never understand why. In fact, I wrote an entire blog about downtown Denver elopements you can read here! Union Station is where I take most of my city couples first. The architecture is warm and layered, the streets surrounding it give you texture and variety, and the light bouncing off the old brick on Wynkoop Street does things that no mountain backdrop can replicate. From there, we can weave into RiNo for murals, find a quiet alley with beautiful shadow play, or end at your favorite spot in the neighborhood.

The State Capitol and Civic Center Park nearby offer a completely different energy. Open sky, manicured gardens, and that unmistakable Denver skyline backdrop. And for couples who want something even more personal, we can build a session around where you actually spend time together. Your favorite local bar. A coffee shop that means something to you. I have done sessions in a dive bar on a Tuesday afternoon and they produced some of the best images I have ever made.

Best for: Couples who love Denver, out-of-town couples who want to feel the city, LGBTQIA+ couples who want a celebratory and affirming urban session. Permit notes: Most public streets and parks are permit-free. Private venues vary. Always ask ahead.

Denver Botanical Gardens: Soft Light, Every Season

The Denver Botanical Gardens are one of those locations that photographs beautifully regardless of when you go, because something is always in bloom. Spring brings tulips. Summer brings dahlias and roses. Fall transitions into late-season chrysanthemums and the golden light that comes with shorter days. The garden paths create natural movement and the canopy overhead filters light in a way that is genuinely flattering for portraits.

A few things to know before you book here. The Botanical Gardens require a photography permit for professional sessions, so we will need to plan for that in advance. Weekend mornings book up quickly during peak bloom seasons, so early planning matters. If you have flexibility, a weekday session here is something special because the grounds are quiet and unhurried.

Best for: Couples who love a soft, romantic aesthetic. Portrait clients. Families. Anyone who wants a garden backdrop that does not feel like a generic outdoor shoot. Permit notes: Photography permit required. Some of my most-loved sessions have happened within 30 to 45 minutes of Denver, and the foothills deliver scenery that genuinely earns its place on your gallery wall.

Red Rocks and Morrison are iconic for a reason. The sandstone formations and wide-open Colorado sky make for dramatic, layered images. Late afternoon is the sweet spot here when the light turns warm and golden against the rock. Commercial photography at Red Rocks requires a permit through Denver Arts and Venues, so plan for it.

Lookout Mountain sits above Golden and gives you sweeping views of both the mountains and the city below. It photographs especially well at golden hour and tends to be quieter than Red Rocks. A solid option when you want that high-up feeling without the crowds.

Mt. Falcon Park is short on drive time and high on scenery. The trail takes you past historic castle ruins, which make for genuinely interesting detail shots. Jefferson County requires a commercial photography permit here. Worth every bit of the paperwork.

Chautauqua Park in Boulder is about 45 minutes from Denver and gives you the Flatirons as your backdrop, which are stunning in a way that never gets old. The OSMP (Open Space Mountain Parks) permit runs $50 and is required for professional photography. Still one of my favorite places to work.

Best for: Couples who want mountain scenery without a full mountain drive. Great for shorter sessions or golden hour timing.

What Makes Colorado Different for Engagement Photos

Colorado gets roughly 300 days of sunshine a year, and the quality of that light at altitude is something I notice every single time. Golden hour here lasts longer than almost anywhere I have shot. The air is clear in a way that makes distant peaks look impossibly sharp. And the sheer variety of landscapes within a few hours of Denver means that no two sessions look the same.

If you are planning a session from out of state, that range is worth thinking about. You can have a mountain lake, a red rock canyon, an alpine meadow, a city block, or a wildflower field, all within driving distance of Denver. Very few states can offer that.

Do You Need a Permit for Engagement Photos in Colorado?

Yes, most engagement photo locations in Colorado require a commercial photography permit for professional sessions, and the rules vary by location.

Rocky Mountain National Park recently updated its policy and no longer requires a separate commercial photography permit for couples sessions, though timed entry reservations are still required to enter the park during peak season. Denver Botanical Gardens, Chautauqua Park (OSMP), Red Rocks, and Mt. Falcon all require permits that need to be arranged in advance.

I take care of permit logistics for all of my clients. It is one less thing on your plate during a season that already has plenty of moving pieces.

Mountain Passes and Alpine Lakes: The Spots People Come to Colorado For

This is the section most people are actually here for. And I get it. Colorado mountain engagement photos have a look that is unlike anything else.

Loveland Pass sits at nearly 12,000 feet and offers some of the most sweeping mountain views I have ever photographed without requiring a real hike to get there. It is about 1.5 hours from Denver, open year-round, and in summer the high alpine tundra is covered in wildflowers that look almost unreal in photographs. The drive to the summit is narrow and has some drop-offs, so it is worth knowing that before you go. But if you can handle the road, the payoff is worth every mile of it. *Honestly, one of my favorite engagement photo locations in Colorado!

Brainard Lake in Ward is one of my personal favorites and has been for years. Open mid-June through mid-October, this spot gives you a glacially carved alpine lake with mountain peaks reflected in still water and rocky shoreline to work with in every direction. It is a 5-minute walk from the parking area, which makes it accessible for almost everyone. The permit situation is straightforward. And sometimes there are moose. No photography permit is required here, which is genuinely unusual. The road takes you through rivers, open meadows, aspen groves, and mountain views, all within a few miles of each other. In fall, when the aspens turn, Guanella Pass becomes one of the most beautiful places I have ever stood. The road closes in winter, typically October through late May, so plan around that if fall color is what you are after.

Lake Dillon in Summit County is easy to access off I-70 and gives you a mountain reservoir surrounded by ridgelines and pine forests. There are multiple access points with different looks, and it photographs beautifully in every season, including winter when the ice on the reservoir catches the low light in a completely different way.

Rocky Mountain National Park: The One Everyone Asks About

Rocky Mountain National Park is the most-requested Colorado engagement session location I receive inquiries about, and it earns that. Dream Lake, Sprague Lake, Bear Lake, Trail Ridge Road, Moraine Park. The park has a range of looks from accessible shoreline walks to dramatic alpine ridges.

A few important things to know for 2026: timed entry reservations are required during peak season, generally May through October. There are two different entry permit tiers depending on where in the park you want to go, so it is worth checking the NPS timed entry reservation page before your session date. The commercial photography permit requirement for couples sessions has been removed, but policies do update, so we confirm everything before booking.

If you are dreaming of a Colorado elopement and want a location that feels like the middle of the wilderness without actually being that remote, the park is worth talking about. Some spots require no hiking at all. Others are a short trail walk. I can help you find the right fit based on your timeline and comfort level.

Best for: Couples who want iconic Colorado mountain scenery. From late June through mid-July, the meadows around town are covered in color in a way that makes every frame look like it was staged. The town itself photographs beautifully too, with its Victorian-era storefronts and the Elk Mountains rising directly behind it. I have shot Crested Butte in wildflower season, in fall with aspen gold, and in winter with heavy snow, and each version is its own completely different thing.

Vail and Piney River Ranch offer a different kind of mountain experience. Anniversary sessions. Destination couples building a weekend around it.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Choose

Seasonal timing in Colorado matters more than most people realize. Wildflower season peaks late June through mid-July, concentrated in the high country. Aspen color runs mid-September through early October and varies by elevation and year. Summer mornings are cooler, less crowded, and have softer light than afternoons, when storms often build. And winter sessions with snow are something I wish more couples considered. The light is clean, the crowds are gone, and the images look like nothing else.

If you are a couple traveling to Colorado from out of town, you can find additional helpful info here!

I genuinely love helping couples narrow down their location based on what actually matters to them, whether that is driving distance, time of year, the kind of images they want on their wall, or just what sounds the most exciting. If you are stuck between a few options, that conversation is part of what I do.

Browse my couples portfolio to see these locations in action, and when you are ready, reach out and we can talk through it. I would love to help you plan something that actually feels like you.

FAQs

What are the best places to take engagement photos in Colorado?
The best Colorado engagement photo locations depend on your style and how far you are willing to travel. Rocky Mountain National Park is the most popular, with spots like Dream Lake, Sprague Lake, and Trail Ridge Road offering iconic mountain scenery. For alpine views closer to Denver, Loveland Pass, Brainard Lake, and Guanella Pass are strong choices with minimal hiking required. Downtown Denver, Red Rocks, and Chautauqua Park in Boulder are excellent options for couples who want the city or foothills as their backdrop.

Where are good places to take engagement photos near Denver?
Several strong engagement photo locations sit within 45 minutes of Denver. Red Rocks and Morrison offer dramatic sandstone formations with a wide Colorado sky. Lookout Mountain near Golden gives you sweeping views of both the mountains and the city. Chautauqua Park in Boulder puts the Flatirons directly behind you. Mt. Falcon Park is a short trail with mountain scenery and historic castle ruins. Downtown Denver itself, including Union Station and the RiNo district, is one of the most underrated engagement session spots in the state.

Do you need a permit for engagement photos in Colorado?
Most Colorado locations require a commercial photography permit for professional sessions. Denver Botanical Gardens, Chautauqua Park (Open Space Mountain Parks), Red Rocks, and Mt. Falcon all require advance permits. Rocky Mountain National Park no longer requires a separate commercial photography permit for couples sessions as of recent policy updates, though timed entry reservations are still required for park access during peak season. Loveland Pass and Guanella Pass generally do not require photography permits. As your photographer, I handle all permit logistics for my clients.

What time of year is best for engagement photos in Colorado?
It depends on what you want the images to look like. Late June through mid-July brings wildflower season, with the high country around Crested Butte and the Indian Peaks covered in color. Mid-September through early October is peak aspen season, especially beautiful at Guanella Pass, Crested Butte, and Loveland Pass. Summer mornings offer soft light and cooler temperatures before afternoon storms build. Winter sessions with snow are genuinely stunning and far less crowded than any other time of year.

Can I bring my dog to my Colorado engagement session?
Yes, and I love when couples include their dogs. Just check the pet policy for your specific location before we finalize the spot. Rocky Mountain National Park allows dogs on paved roads and in parking areas but not on most trails or in the backcountry. Brainard Lake and Guanella Pass are both dog-friendly. Downtown Denver parks generally welcome leashed dogs. If bringing your dog is a priority, we can plan the location around that from the start.

A Denver photographer’s honest breakdown of 15+ Colorado engagement photo locations, from Brainard Lake to downtown Denver.
